Outdoor Safety...

 Good day River Village Residents,

It is that time of year again to remind us all of outdoor safety in regards to interacting with wildlife.  While wildlife may be an awesome & inspiring thing to look at, please do so from afar.  We do live in rural Maine after all, which includes the presence of foxes, black bear, deer, rats, groundhogs, & all sorts of other creatures that may look wondrous...but may not be overly friendly towards humans or our pets.  Wildlife are not domesticated & should be viewed from a distance to ensure our safety as well as their safety.

Take steps now to prevent wildlife from coming too close to your residence:
Rake up unused bird seed from the ground
Remove birdfeeders between April 1 and November 1
Keep pet food and trash inside or in fenced areas
    Clean grills thoroughly after use

Remember that wildlife, other than being potentially dangerous on their own...can also carry critters that cause disease, such as animals carrying ticks that carry Lyme disease.  Please familiarize yourself with best practices related to maximizing your enjoyment of the outdoors in a safe & healthy manner.

More information can be found here regarding ticks & tickborne illnesses:  https://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/infectious-disease/epi/vector-borne/tick-messaging.shtml

Kayak Storage...

Good afternoon all,

I would like to share some exciting news with you from within our community.

Given that our wonderful riverfront community is on the water & near so many other wonderful bodies of water that our community can enjoy during nice weather, a lot of us own some sort of watercraft.  As a result, I am pleased to share that River Village now has kayak/canoe storage on site.  Each storage unit can hold up to 6 kayaks/canoes with a unit near Phase I & another in the middle of Phase III.  We invite River Village residents to utilize these units to store your kayak/canoe (free of charge), if you wish & doing so at your own risk.

Phase I near the path to the beach.

Phase III (between buildings)

Please be advised that security of your property (kayak/canoe) is your responsibility & you use these storage units at your own risk.  River Village Condo Association (RVCA) will not be responsible for the safety & security of your property (kayak/canoe).

Be Aware of Wildlife in the Neighborhood (Follow-up for 2021)...

Spring has sprung early this year and wildlife is wasting no time shedding winter’s grip to enjoy the nice spring weather.

For many of these animals, such as black bears, they have lost a significant amount of body weight and are on the move looking for food after emerging from their winter dens. While denning, black bears enter a state of torpor, slowing their metabolism and respiration, breathing only once per 15 to 45 seconds, and dropping their heart rate to 8-21 beats per minute. Even with a lowered metabolic rate, bears still lose significant body fat. Unlike true hibernators, bears don’t eat, drink, urinate, or defecate during this time.

Once spring comes and bears emerge from their den, for two to three weeks bears are working to regulate their bodily functions slowly until normal activity ensues. At this time of year, natural foods are limited, and bears may take the risk and wander into backyards in search of easily accessible food.

Take steps now to prevent black bears from coming to your yard:
Rake up unused bird seed from the ground
Remove birdfeeders between April 1 and November 1
Keep pet food and trash inside or in fenced areas
    Clean grills thoroughly after use

Be Aware of Wildlife in the Neighborhood...

Good morning all,

Please be aware of wildlife that has been roaming through the neighborhood.  A few months back there was a skunk in the area that I personally observed (once) & a wonderful groundhog neighbor living not far from the river.  However, lately there have been a couple small black bear cubs roaming through as well.  When dealing with wildlife, it is best to be aware of them & maintain distance to ensure your safety as well as their safety.  The Game Warden is currently apprised of the situation & we will be monitoring things closely.  If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact one of the members of the Board of Directors.

Thank you for your time & attention to this matter,
your friendly neighborhood Spiderman
